US insists on tougher action against Qaeda

WASHINGTON: The Bush administration said on Wednesday it will insist on a tougher approach to fighting Al Qaeda in Pakistan, acknowledging that a strategy pushed by Musharraf had not worked. “There’s no doubt that more aggressive steps need to be taken,” White House spokesman Tony Snow said. “President Musharraf attempted to engage in...carrot diplomacy with tribal leaders in the tribal areas and it didn’t work,” Snow said. “So what you have to do when something doesn’t work is you have to fix it, and that’s what’s going on now.” The strategy had “created an opportunity for Qaeda to find safe haven,” he said. reuters
